A New Boat, Without the New Boat Price Tag: How One Wrap Brought a Forgotten Vessel – and Its Owner – Back to Life
There’s a certain kind of magic that happens when you breathe new life into something that’s been forgotten. It’s not just about how it looks; it’s about how it feels. That’s exactly what happened with my very first boat wrap project: a 20-year-old Renegade that had been collecting dust by the side of a garage, now transformed into a “new” boat that reignited its owner’s love for the water… and even changed the way he works.
A Boat Left Behind
A close friend of mine owns a 26-foot Renegade that hadn’t touched the water in years. It was a good boat – solid, dependable – but time had taken its toll. The once-bright hull was faded and dull, and the excitement of owning it had worn off long ago. He didn’t want to part with it, but he didn’t have a reason to use it anymore, either.
At the same time, he was feeling stuck in another way. As a business owner who works from home, he told me he was getting tired of being cooped up indoors every day. That’s when a lightbulb went off:
“What if we wrapped your boat – gave it a completely new look – and you turned it into your workspace on the water?”
He paused for a moment, thought about it, and then said yes. That was all the encouragement I needed.
Turning an Idea Into a Plan
The first step was capturing the boat in its “before” state. I took plenty of photos and sent them to Shelby, who prepped them for design. Together, we created several wrap concepts, each with its own personality and vibe.
While we worked on the designs, the installers came out to take precise measurements – a small but essential detail that ensures a perfect fit. When I sent the design options to my friend, he made it a family event. Everyone got involved in choosing the colors and style, and by the end, we had a design that everyone was excited about.
Once the final file was ready, we sent it off to our certified 3M wrap printer. It took a few days to print and laminate the vinyl, and then we waited for our installation date. Those two weeks felt long – I couldn’t wait to see the transformation.

Installation Day: Watching the Magic Happen
When the big day arrived, we towed the Renegade to the wrap shop early in the morning. Because of its height, the team had to do the installation outside – which turned out to be a great opportunity for me to watch and learn (and yes, I was definitely that person watching from my car like a nosy neighbor, think Gladys Kravitz).
The process was fascinating. First, the installers wiped down every inch of the hull with alcohol to remove any oils that could affect the adhesion. Then they brought out the vinyl – two massive printed sheets, one for each side – and carefully positioned them on the boat, almost like hanging curtains.
They worked slowly and methodically, smoothing the film from top to bottom and letting gravity lend a hand. Squeegees pressed the vinyl firmly into place, and by the end of the day, the transformation was complete. The tired old Renegade I had seen so many times before looked brand new – sleek, vibrant, and ready for adventure again.

Falling in Love With the Water Again
But the real transformation happened after the wrap. My friend was so inspired by the new look that he immediately started investing in upgrades – a new Garmin, fresh wiring, a replaced canvas top. The boat that once sat forgotten by the garage was suddenly his favorite place to be.
And true to the original plan, he started working from the water. His “new” boat became his floating office – a place to think creatively, meet clients, and enjoy a fresh perspective on work and life. It wasn’t just a makeover. It was a lifestyle shift.
And the best part? He achieved all of that without spending hundreds of thousands of dollars on a new vessel. A custom wrap gave him the new-boat feeling for a fraction of the price.
(Though, in classic ironic fashion, his truck’s transmission did fail a block from the shop on the way home… but hey, at least the boat was perfect.)
Why a Wrap Is More Than a Cosmetic Upgrade
That project taught me something important: a great wrap is about so much more than appearance. It’s about possibility. It’s about falling in love with your boat all over again, discovering new ways to use it, and unlocking new experiences without the hefty price tag of a new vessel.
If your boat is sitting idle because it feels outdated or uninspiring, a custom wrap might be the smartest investment you’ll ever make. With the right design and expert installation, you can give your vessel a fresh start – and maybe even change the way you use it.
